RB 79/00088 Wilkinson 1. Well completion report.

Wilkinson 1 stratigraphic well was drilled by the SA Department of Mines and Energy in mid-1978, about 250 km south-west of Coober Pedy, in the Tallaringa Trough. Here a thick section of Cambrian claystones, limestones and evaporites, at least 594 m thick, was penetrated, which has a high petroleum source potential and exhibits some abnormally high copper, zinc, and lead concentrations. An Early Cambrian age has been determined for acritarchs occurring within the sequence deposited above the evaporites. The section drilled was: 18 m of Quaternary sand; 98 m of Tertiary Pidinga Formation consisting of sandstone, gravel and minor lignite; 594 m of Cambrian Observatory Hill Beds. The latter is sub-divided informally into Unit I of sandy claystone; Unit II of micrite, dolomicrite, and dolomite; and Unit III of halite and siltstone with minor sandstone. Some of the fine-grained carbonates from this well display an excellent source potential for oil.
