An appraisal of the mineral resources within the area of the District Council of Barossa has been made to assist the Council in preparing planning regulations. The area under review covers the entire Hundred of Barossa, and parts of the Hundreds of Moorooroo, Nuriootpa and Para Wirra. The area is located on the Barossa, Onkaparinga, Angaston and Tepko 1:50,000 map sheets and within the Adelaide 1:250,000 geological map sheet area. As a result of a continuously growing population and the development of new uses of minerals, the demand for raw minerals is also growing rapidly, and the approach to planning for the exploitation of mineral deposits, a "non-renewable resource", must therefore differ from that employed for making plans to use renewable resources such as forest products, agricultural products, etc. This report, in endeavouring to provide the data on which planning and conservation programmes can be based, comprises: a) A review of the geological environment to indicate where workable deposits may be found as a result of future exploration. b) A summary of known industrial and metallic mineral deposits c) A statement of tenements held under the Mining Act as at 31/8/1979, and d) A summary of parcels of land currently reserved for other purposes e.g. water, forest, recreations, agriculture.
