Two major Late Proterozoic glaciations, separated by a thick interglacial interval of the order of 3000 m, are recorded in the Adelaide Geosyncline of South Australia. The earlier, Sturtian, succession includes two major glacial phases according to Coats et al., (1977, p. 19-20), but only one according to Murrell et al., 1977, p. 16-19). The later, Marinoan, stratigraphic record occurs about 8000 m below the Ediacara fauna and 8700 m below the base of the Cambrian.
