Tonnages and gold content of tailings and slimes stockpiled at the Government Stamp Battery at Peterborough were calculated from hand auger drilling and mining return records. The amount of recoverable gold was determined by mineralogical and cyanidation studies. Results indicate a treatable reserve of between 1400 and 1800 tonnes of tailings and slimes containing between 6500 and 8400 g gold (average grade 4.7 g/tonne), of which between 4600 and 5900 g gold with a current value of between $32 000 and $41 000 (Feb. 1979 gold price of $7/g) are recoverable by cyanidation without further grinding. Costing estimates show that setting up a cyanidation process for treating the identified reserve of battery spoils is presently not economically feasible. It is recommended that the tailings and slimes either be retained for treatment in the future, or be sold by tender.
