Stratigraphic sections were measured through the Callanna Beds and lower Burra Group, by tape and air photo enlargement, at the following localities: (1) north-east of Kingston Dam, (2) south-east of Dome Hill and (3) west of Callanna Homestead. At (1) a probable equivalent of the River Wakefield subgroup and underlying lower Burra Group measures over 2900 m thick, and is predominantly sandy and thin-bedded. Section (2) features over 4800 m thickness of Callanna Beds, which are notably richer in carbonate rocks, and halite and gypsum casts. Both (1) and (2) appear to represent shallow-water conditions, with intermittent drying out, possibly on a tidal flat or lake. A lacustrine environment is advocated by von der Borch (personal communication, 1979). At (3) sandstones, possibly at the base of the local Callanna Beds sequence, contain heavy mineral laminations resembling the Rhynie Sandstone (Burra Group) and pebbly trough cross-beds representing north easterly-flowing channels. Their thickness is over 1400 m.
