The Adelaidean is the youngest Precambrian subdivision of the Proterozoic in Australia. The Adelaide Geosyncline is its stratotype basin, since it contains the thickest sequences and the most complete record of late Proterozoic sedimentation in Australia. Lithostratigraphic correlation of late Adelaidean tillite - bearing sequences in now possible for all major Australian basins. The geochronology, geological history and biostratigraphy of Australian Adelaidean basins is described and correlated with the Adelaide Geosyncline.
