A method developed by Hoek and Brown (1980) has been used to predict the volume and shape of wedge failures which could theoretically occur from the proposed tunnel roof in the vicinity of the northern portal. Six configurations have been determined, the largest having a volume of 1250 cubic m. The method should be applied more extensively before and during tunnel construction in order to recognise other potential failure masses along the tunnel alignment.
