Dewatering began in 1975 and 10 000 kl/day is being pumped, to be increased to 16 000 kl/day until the cessation of mining in 1981. Although dewatering has caused a water level decline of several metres within 3 km of the mine, yields are still adequate for stock and domestic purposes. Regional groundwater quality is 2 000-3 000 mg/l TDS. After the end of mining the regional water level will recover to leave a large open lake in place of the mining operation.
