Continued investigations to identify relationships between organic carbon content and trace metal content confirmed conventionally defined rock units in the Basin exhibit characteristic trace element signatures. In Big Lake 23, the carbonaceous shale sequence of the Toolachee Formation may be subdivided into 2 or 3 chemostratigraphic units not otherwise recognisable from well logs. The Daralingie Formation and the Roseneath Shale have been subdivided into upper and lower units.
