A double tunnel is proposed through Wylie Ridge to carry the southeastern freeway into Adelaide thus by-passing the Devil's Elbow. The tunnel would pass through a fault block containing the Mitcham Quartzite and the underlying siltstones (Glen Osmond Slate). The rocks are completly folded and slightly overturned westerly. Axial planes and the main cleavage dip eastward. The rocks are strongly jointed but faulting is not intense within the fault block. The rocks are weathered in depth and the tunnel line is in part below the water table. Four angled and one horizontal diamond drill hole have been drilled by the Highways Department.
