From 1920 - 1976, ball clay was mined at Magazine Hill for pottery and porcelainware. Production from 1931 - 1976 was 11 805 tonnes. The light grey plastic clay is composed of kaolin and illite with some quartz, white mica, iron oxides and gypsum. It occurs in the bleached zone of a silcrete profile developed on a highly weathered shale unit within Woocalla Dolomite Member, overlying massive dolomite which is quarried for rail ballast and road aggregate 1 km to the east. The clay has high plasticity and easy vitrification but gypsum content is high, fired colour is poor and scumming is a problem. Reserves are 27 000 tonnes.
