Coonawarra is important viticultural area. Its establishment was possible because of low salinity groundwater and suitable soil. Since 1970 groundwater levels have shown no significant decline due to irrigation and no increase in salinity. A pollution plume (nitrate exceeding 45 mg/L) is thought to result from winery waste disposal and agriculture. There are 50 domestic water supply wells and the high nitrate concentrations are of concern.
