Palaeoclimate is discussed, particularly in the central and southern parts of the continent, based on an overview of wide range of data. The oceanic record has provided the means for obtaining a refined chronological framework in which to place events bearing on climate. This study also details the land flora record and the inland sedimentary sequences with their related weathering profiles and duricrusts. Problems inherent in deducing past climate from such methods are discussed.
