In Adelaide, the term loam' is applied indiscriminately to variety of soils for use in gardens irrespective of texture or suitability. Most of the loam is obtained from fluvial sediments of the Gawler River. The Mining Act has no power to control loam extraction, although safety and amenity provisions apply. Of 44 samples tested, only 1 complied with Australian Standard for garden soils for domestic use.
