Metasandstone, possibly Inman Hill Formation of the Kanmantoo Group, with steep northerly dip, was quarried for coarse concrete aggregate for the dam and associated works. It resembles quartzite, being very hard with irregular fractures producing a good particle shape. Large reserves exist west and north of the quarry.
