Major deposits of palygorskite group minerals were formed in 3 different environments :(1) as chemical sediments, or early diagenetic transformations of certain smectite group clays, in epicontinental and inland seas and lakes; (2) by diagenesis of materials such as volcanic dust in the open oceans;(3) in calcareous soils by direct crystallization.
