Groundwater supplies obtained from aquifers within a complex series of sediments of Cainozoic age are used in the Barossa Valley for irrigation, mainly of vineyards. The estimated annual extraction volume is 1.6 million cubic metres. A tentative water budget shows a near balance with recharge. Water levels monitored in observation wells indicate that a complete or near recovery of the water table occurs annually. There is presently no conclusive evidence that the Barossa Valley groundwater salinity is increasing on a regional scale. Reported local salinity increases probably reflect problems with individual wells.
