2 distinct groups of basaltic volcanoes constitute a western extension to the Newer Volcanics of western Victoria. The older Mount Burr Range group include 14 fissure controlled centres with lava flows, composite domes and cones and tuff rings or maars. Their ejecta lie between Pliocene erosional surface on Gambier Limestone, and the Pleistocene Bridgewater Formation. Mounts Gambier and Schank form a younger group. Both are maar cone complexes and rest on top of Pleistocene aeolianites. Thermoluminescence and carbon-14 dating, recent seismicity, and possible offshore submarine lava flow may indicate that the province is still active.
