During the past 15 years, a major investigation (553 Rb-Sr and 100 K-Ar analyses) were undertaken to determine the Archaean - Proterozoic stratigraphic, magmatic and tectonic history. The isotopic dates define 3 broad groupings, Sleafordian Orogeny (2 500 - 2 300 Ma), Kimban Orogeny (1 820 - 1 580 Ma) and third phase including the Wartakan Event (1 580 - 1 400 Ma). The oldest rocks (Archaean - Early Proterozoic) belong to the Mulgathing Complex in the north and Sleaford Complex in the south.
