The Quaternary stratigraphy in the trench was examined within the Strzelecki dunefield near Montecollina Bore, near Big John Creek and to the south (mainly Balcanoona). Longitudinal and transverse dune sands demonstrated a history of episodic dune building over former extensive alluvial deposits. The younger sand phases intertongue with and overlie abandoned channel deposits of the Strzelecki Creek. Charcoal was dated at about 1 300 years BP and younger. Deposits of gravelly relatively straight coursed streams and fine facies of distal fans completely dominate the landscape from Big John Creek southwards to the ranges. The deposits of recent flood cycles are described.
