The heavy mineral fraction of an alluvial sand south of Moomba contains fine black magnetic grains. X-ray diffraction and electron probe analyses show that the magnetic grains have a hexagonal crystal structure intermediate between that of hematite and limenite and a composition of iron titanate with minor magnesium and manganese. A similar fraction collected by Wopfner and Townend (1968) from the shores of Lake Hope appears to be mineralogically identical.
