The subject exploration licence was taken up for a 1-year term to enable ETSA and SADME to jointly conduct exploration for possible Triassic coal basins that might be concealed beneath alluvial cover in sparsely drilled areas to the north and north-west of Leigh Creek. South-west of Farina, and within or adjacent to ETSA's Leigh Creek mining lease, 11 shallow rotary mud exploratory open holes with a total penetration of 285 m were drilled during May 1982 into bedrock and geophysically logged, but failed to discover any coal or potentially coal-bearing sediments. The negative Bouguer anomalies selected as drill targets were shown to be variously due to bedrock depressions filled with unconsolidated Tertiary and Quaternary sediments, to deep weathering of the bedrock, or to marked changes in bedrock lithology.
