The Telford Basin is an asymmetrically shaped synclinal basin containing sediments of upper Triassic-Jurassic age, which cover a 25 square km area. Sub-bituminous coal occurs in three major series of seams which are informally termed the Leigh Creek Lower, Main and Upper Series coal measures. These coal seams were deposited in an intramontane fluvio-lacustrine environment. The Lower and Main Series have been pervasively faulted, whilst the Upper Series appears to have remained unfaulted. Four areas of the Telford Basin were initially considered as possibly being suitable for the conduct of underground coal gasification (UCG): these were defined as the north-western, eastern, southern and Upper Series coal seam subcrop areas. This investigation, however, has indicated that the potential for performing successful UCG in the southern area is very low. The geological parameters affecting the feasibility of a successful UCG implementation include coal seam continuity (determined by facies changes, faulting and folding), coal seam thickness, depth of coal and seam attitude, the competence and permeability of surrounding strata, and the absence of connectivity to aquifers containing groundwater and/or meteoric water. It was concluded that UCG may be technically feasible in the Telford Basin, although the collection of much additional new drillhole data would be required to substantiate this with reasonable certainty. Furthermore, any future evaluation studies will have to quantify the coal resources available for UCG. The target areas will need to be extensively drilled with fully and partially cored holes and then geophysically logged downhole, following the acquisition of several seismic traverses to assist in delineating the basin geometry. These areas would also require geotechnical analysis of the strength of coal seam roof materials, plus characterisation of their hydrogeology, to inform any decisions about proceeding with UCG trials.
