Forty-two thin sections collected from the Skillogalee Dolomite are representative of carbonate and non-carbonate facies, and include shales, siltstones, sandstones and conglomerates. Many of the specimens are partly or wholly stromatolitic: two large thin sections demonstrate the demise and partial dismemberment of algal reef structures in the face of severe environmental fluctuations. Intraformational conglomerates and minor intraformational disturbances are evidence of sequences of drought and flood which affected the deposition of many parts of the formation. Complete dessication is demonstrated by mud cracking and by the cavities left by evaporite minerals, probably halite. Dolomite and minor calcite have been identified optically, and siderite is probably also present. To confirm this and to test for the presence of magnesite, it is suggested that X-ray diffraction scans should be carried out on selected samples. An internal drainage system is suggested as a depositional environment. Recrystallisation is ascribed in part to possible duricrust formation and in part to carbonate mobility after burial, and to stress and contact metamorphism.
