Ground water from aquifers within complex series of Cainozoic sediments are used in the Barossa Valley for irrigation, mainly of vineyards. Estimated annual extraction is 1.6 x 106 m3. Tentative water budget shows near balance. Water levels in observation wells indicated complete or near recovery annually. Water quality varies with quite saline groundwater being found at the water table in some areas. Groundwater usage will result in quality changes with time. These changes can be exacerbated by poor well construction. Monitoring programme using private irrigation wells should be maintained indefinitely.
