Specimens from the Mt Grainger Goldfield include quartzites, sandstones in which kaolinite is believed to represent earlier feldspar, siltstones, shales, diamictites of probable glaciogene origin, granitoids and andesites. Low to moderate temperature hydrothermal processes include kaolinitisation, silicification, local total dissolution of the rock, potassium metasomatism, haematite mineralisation, limonitic weathering and the deposition of minor carbonate and manganese oxide. Pyrite pseudomorphs and brown spots in the fine grained sediments may be the original source of iron, and possibly of gold, in the rocks. Concentration of iron as massive and boxwork haematite in vein systems may have carried gold with it. The nature of the hydrothermal solutions and the possible involvement of gold are discussed, and recommendations for further work are made.
