This report presents a comprehensive summary of the results of considerable geological, survey and beneficiation work which has been carried out at four mines. The mined deposits have been formed in Burra Group schists and gneisses that constitute the lowermost part of the Woolshed Flat Shale. The Mount Crawford mine has been worked since the early 1900s. Its present owner is Australian Industrial Minerals. The orebody being worked here continues at depth, and the estimated remaining total quantity of ore, down to 50 m below the pit floor level, is 120 000 t. The ore consists of sillimanite rock, kaolinized sillimanite (kaosil), and muscovite mica (damourite). The exposed orebody is 45 m long x 20 m wide, and it has been mined by open cut methods to 80 m depth. Appraisal drilling has proven its continuance for a further 50 m, with no sign of termination. However, in the near future the mining operations will terminate because of the deteriorating ore to overburden ratio and the growing problem of mine waste disposal. It is suggested that the life of the mine could be extended either by adapting the mining method to the geometry of the orebody i.e. commencing underground mining, or through measures to reduce wastage by utilizing material at present discarded.
