Thermally altered argillites and mobilised rocks of anomalous compositions have been attributed to the burning of coal seams in the Triassic succession deposited in the small synclinal 'Springfield' Basin. Some aspects of this explanation appear unsatisfactory in view of the new petrographic evidence presented herein, and alternative possibilities are canvassed.
