Vibrocores and observations from within the intertidal zone demonstrate that only limited coastal sedimentation has occurred during the Holocene. Morphological development of the coast has been contained and controlled by older lithologies. Large areas of apparent supratidal origin are calcreted tidal flats of an earlier (Glanville Formation) high sea level phase.
