Orama Hill gold mine, also known as Koonamore Goldfield or Butlers Claim recorded production since 1930 of 808.89 grams of bullion. The mine is on the steeply dipping, sheared, axial plane of the Orama Hill anticline, in sandstone, siltstone and shale of Umberatana Group Wilyerpa Quartzite. Gold is associated with ferruginization and iron oxide rich pods within quartz veins which have formed in fractures and joints. Source of the gold is uncertain. However, beds with weathered sulphide spots are common in the region. Gold originally within pyrite was hydrothermally remobilized into favourable structures during the Delamerian Orogeny followed by supergene enrichment.Geological mapping, sampling (227) and 3 core holes, (117 metres) proved that localised gold mineralization is concentrated in steep ferruginous zones, averaging 30 cm thick near workings on former ML4855. However, the creek draining the western portion of the structure has been worked for alluvial gold and trenching is recommended. Results of trace element analyses to determine possible indicator elements for gold were inconclusive. However, cadmium, bismuth, antimony and lead contents tend to support a sedimentary origin for the gold.
