Jade was first discovered in 1965, 20 km north of Cowell. It consists of nephrite formed within the migmatised Early Proterozoic Minbrie Gneiss Complex, with host rocks of dolomite marble and banded calc silicates. Alteration zones around nephrite lenses consist of chlorite, tremolite, talc, epidote and clinozoisite. Describes 3 diamond drilling programmes : 6 holes in 1970 by Analytical Expln Pty Ltd, 7 in 1973 by Centamin NL and 4 in 1983 by SADME. Depths varied from 11 to 40 metres. Many of these holes were unsuccessful in locating nephrite. Re-evaluation of drill hole data has provided new information on controls of nephrite formation. Nephrite is associated with : 1) distinctive chloritized feldspar rock intruding dolomite marble, 2) where dolomite marble is faulted and offset by fractures and 3) where uralitization of diopside has occurred. 36 of 113 outcrops have been quarried. Production was 1055 tonnes from 1967 to 1985.
