Kyanite has been concentrated in early to middle Proterozoic Willyama Supergroup regionally metamorphosed mica kyanite schist by late stage contact metamorphic recrystallization. Based on 1950 - 1963 investigations for refractory grade material, maximum average in-situ grade of 6.6% kyanite at the 3 largest deposits, Sprigg, Brown and Kyanite Ridge was too low for commercial operation, despite an acceptable concentrate of 57.0% Al2O3 being produced in, the laboratory. During 1985 - 1986 reappraisal, kyanite content was found to exceed 6.6% in parts of several deposits and an excellent +98% kyanite concentrate assaying 61.7% Al2O3 was produced from Dey Hill schist containing 25% kyanite. The by-product was high grade biotite mica with many industrial applications. Follow up investigations are justified at Dey Hill, Sprigg, Brown and Kyanite Ridge to prove extent and grade of kyanite rich zones and to determine beneficiation methods.
