Sugarloaf Hill quarry 18 km NE of Barmera has been operating since 1949. Pleistocene dolomitic Bungunnia Limestone has been the source of aggregate, and underlying bimodal Pliocene Loxton Sands, the source of construction sand. Production has been 120,854 tonnes of dolomite, and 18,000 tonnes of sand, from 1949 - 1985. Allowing for a 2:1 ratio of overburden to dolomite as a mineable limit, the remaining measured reserves of dolomite are 930,000 tonnes, and the remaining indicated reserves of sand are 3.8 million tonnes, above RL 13 m. The remaining volume of overburden, comprising clay, gravel, sand, silt and calcrete, is estimated at 960,000 tonnes. Additional mineral claims will be required.
