Reports of gold occurrences within SA date from 1840. The first authenticated discovery was on 4 April 1846 by Tyrell from the Victoria Copper mine, near Castambul, 18 km ENE of Adelaide, the first in Australia from which actual mining operations resulted. The first payable goldfield was the Echunga Goldfield in 1852, followed by Forest Range in 1854, Barossa Goldfield in 1868, Mount Crawford and Ulooloo in 1869, German Reef, Mount Pleasant and Birdwood in 1870, Para Wirra in 1871, Waukaringa in 1873, Woodside in 1881, Gumeracha in 1884, Koh-i-Noor and Mannahill in 1885, Teetulpa and Algebuckina in 1886, Kings Bluff and New Luxemburg in 1887, Wadnaminga in 1888, Mount Grainger in 1893, Nillinghoo in 1894, Glenloth and Tarcoola in 1899, Deloraine in 1909, and Mongolata near Burra, in 1930. Gold has been produced as a by-product from copper deposits at Kitticoola, Moonta / Wallaroo and Kanmantoo and is known in smaller base metal mines such as Dome Rock, Baratta, Yudnamutana and Woman-In-White. Significant quantities of gold are present in the Olympic Dam deposit. Summarises gold mines and occurrences to 1890 and copper and silver lead mines in which gold was recognized.
