The distinctive large, benthonic, shallow marine foraminifer Lepidocyclina howchini has been identified, with an associated benthonic microfauna, in limestone in a borrow pit located in the Bremer Valley 3 km east of Kanmantoo. The limestone is a marginal correlative of the Morgan Limestone of the Murray Basin. The elevation, depositional palaeodepth constraints, and the age (probably earliest Middle Miocene, about 16 Ma), when taken together would suggest a relative uplift of at least 100 metres within the last 16 Ma for this part of the Mount Lofty Ranges. This Bremer Valley fossil locality is 50 metres higher than the only other high level record of the L. howchini Zone in the Mount Lofty Ranges, sited 63 km distant to the SW within the historic Myponga [Sub-basin] coal exploration bore A which was privately drilled in 1930.
