Andamooka Opal Fields, have been major world producer of precious opal since 1933. Opal has formed within a weathered, bleached profile at the interface of white, sandy claystone (Kopi) and underlying, grey brown montmorillonitic clay (Mud) near the base of Cretaceous Marree Subgroup. Usually this interface, or Level, is marked by a pebble or conglomerate layer. Opal has formed in suitable crevices or has been trapped at permeability barriers. During June - October 1984, 81 shafts were sunk. Potch and / or coloured concrete encountered in 4 shafts north of Lunatic and Halfway Fields, warrants further investigation. Data from 71 holes, drilled independently, outside of present workings, have been recorded.
