From 1873 to 1894, this goldfield, located 35 km north of Yunta, produced over 45,000 ounces (1400 kg) of gold from approximately 60,000 tonnes of ore, dug from a series of quartz-ironstone-pyrite reefs that dip southwards at 32 degrees on the northern flank of the Waukaringa Syncline. The Main Reef produced most of the gold, principally from the Alma - Victoria (95%) and Alma Extended (less than 4%) mines, where the reef is stratabound in the uppermost part of the Tapley Hill Formation, at or near its contact with the overlying basal Cox Sandstone Member of the Tarcowie Siltstone. The origin of the gold is thought to be syngenetic with deposition of these Adelaidean sediments. Underground in the Alma - Victoria mine, 3500 tonnes of in-situ oxidized ore remain in pillars which average 7.0 g/t Au. The indicated reserves of tailings present at surface near Alma - Victoria are 40,000 tonnes grading at 3 g/t Au, and near the Alma Extended mine, are 1080 tonnes grading at 1.47 g/t Au.
