About 70% of Kangaroo Island soils are acidic and continued cultivation will cause increasing acidity. The best treatment is application of lime sand from deposits of Holocene Semaphore Sand along the southern coast. Material tested has high calcium carbonate content and is suitably sized for direct application. However, most of these deposits are not available for mining being located in :- Conservation Parks - 800 m Coastal Reserve> - areas of thick vegetationA survey of remaining deposits indicated that mobile dunes at Little Sahara, which contain an inferred quantity of 63 million tonnes of lime sand, are the only available source. Mining at the site proposed would have minimal environmental impact on this feature which is a Geological Monument.
