Drilling of 4 holes and a review of existing geological data aimed to assess the potential for coal in the Late Cretaceous Winton Formation. Clayton-3 was cored to a depth of 150 metres as a stratigraphic hole. It intersected Quaternary, Tertiary and the Cretaceous Winton, Mackunda and possibly the Oodnadatta Formations. 3 additional exploratory boreholes (CA1, CA2 and CA3) drilled to test the extent and nature of coal seams in the Winton Formation, discovered only thin stringers of coal in borehole CA3. These coal seams are unprospective due to their thin and discontinuous nature.
