Drilling for salt water for construction purposes at Oak Valley was unsuccessful because of the difficulty of developing a fine sand aquifer. A further 9 wells were drilled to search for potable water west of Oak Valley. 1 produced 0.35 L/s of 2 200 mg/L water and 1 0.02 L/s of 1 000 mg/L water. The remainder yielded only small supplies of salt water. Because of the high cost of alternative water supplies it is economic to equip these low yielding wells. A groundwater prospects map has been prepared. Drilling is recommended over a wide area of the Maralinga Lands.
