As part of a project to document all building stone deposits in South Australia, 3 quarries and McLellands sand pit near Waikerie and Ramco were mapped on 19-20 June 1985 and the fourth quarry (Toolunka) was inspected. The upper portion of late Pliocene, Northwest Bend Formation quarried for building stone up to 8 metres thick, comprises fossiliferous sandy and calcareous sediments, with characteristic oyster beds in places. Production mainly from the early 1930s to 1960 totalled 10 054 tonnes, until quarrying ceased in 1982. Several prominent Adelaide buildings feature this stone. Waikerie Limestone from Blakes quarry has similar physical characteristics to the more widely used Murray Bridge Limestone.
