The scope for mineralisation ranges from Late Archaean iron and base metal deposits to Middle Proterozoic copper-uranium-gold-silver and rare earth elements. Archaean rocks are dominantly high-grade gneissic metasediments which are particularly magnetite rich. Early Proterozoic sequences form a fold belt along the eastern side of the craton and include metamorphosed calcareous, iron rich and clastic sediments with base metal potential and the currently mined iron ore deposits. Deformed acid volcanics, similar in age and geochemistry to Mount Isa region volcanics, also occur within the eastern fold belt and host copper-gold mineralisation. Middle Proterozoic sediments and acid volcanics are extensive in the central craton and host copper-uranium-gold-silver mineralisation near the eastern margin of the craton and gold within the central / NW region.
