Field work (including topographic survey and drilling of 3 fully cored drill holes totalling 78 metres), laboratory tests and computer aided stability analysis were carried out to assess the safety of a portion of the coastal cliffs near the Kingscote Esplanade. The in situ Permian glacial sediments and the overlying clay are of sufficient strength and continuity to prevent large scale failures affecting the road, but some clay areas could lead to failures similar to the one in 1983 during wet winters.
