This paper is the first detailed study of the nature, origin and depositional setting of the Early Cambrian Carrickalinga Head Formation, the basal unit of the Kanmantoo Group. It is a study of a submarine delta fan system. The unit rests conformably on the Heatherdale Shale (the top unit of the Normanville Group) or is faulted against Late Proterozoic (Adelaidean) sediments. It is overlain conformably by the Backstairs Passage Formation. It comprises 3 members which are described. At Sedan Hill in the NE Mount Lofty Ranges the whole sequence represents a shallower water environment than on Fleurieu Peninsula.
