Since 1947 the area has been a major source of construction sand, brick shale and plastic clay, the latter two commodities being produced from fluvio-lacustrine sediments of Tertiary age within the Golden Grove Embayment, on the eastern flank of the Saint Vincent Basin. 69 reverse circulation drillholes totalling 2 674.5 metres were drilled during 1986-87 to evaluate the resource, especially in the deeper parts of the basin. Reserves proven within the Extractive Industry Zone south of Crouch Road are 42 million tonnes of coarse and 12 million tonnes of fine construction sand, 24 million tonnes of filling sand and 15 million tonnes of plastic clay. It is recommended that a management plan be prepared to provide a framework for future mining operations, to maximize yields, assist with co-ordinated reclamation of individual workings and identify the range of after-uses.
