On the NE margin of the Nullarbor Plain in western SA are preserved coastal dunes, dune ridges and possible beach ridges. The longest is the Ooldea Range, a 650 km long coastal dune that lies 25-300 km from the present coast. These coastal aeolian landforms were formed at the end of the Eocene, after maximum marine transgression in the Eucla Basin. This paper discusses the morphology, stratigraphy, age, origin and significance of the dunes, and the factors involved in their formation and preservation.
