The Murray Basin contains major deposits of heavy mineral sands, and intensive exploration for them is currently being conducted in Victoria, SA and NSW. It is evident that the western part of the basin was well supplied during the Pliocene and Early Pleistocene by sediment sources that had appropriate mineralogical compositions, whilst in terms of basin geomorphology, many potential coastal trap sites existed. Immature marginal marine sediments forming the Pliocene coastal complex of the Marmon-Jabuk Range in SA contain economically important heavy minerals that include ilmenite, zircon, rutile and tourmaline. Specific targets are identified, including the down-drift, littoral zone of foredunes and coastal barriers, the source area for transgressive dune complexes, tombolo attachment facies, and intertidal shoals and sandbanks. Similar coastal processes are recognised as having been active during the formation of a preserved Early Pleistocene barrier complex.
