Gold was discovered at Mongolata in 1930 by Henry A Byles. Crushing from the State Battery commenced in 1933. 7 600 tonnes of ore were crushed for a yield of 319 246 grams of gold bullion, with average grade of tailings of 2.80 g/t Au. 3 120...

Gold was discovered at Mongolata in 1930 by Henry A Byles. Crushing from the State Battery commenced in 1933. 7 600 tonnes of ore were crushed for a yield of 319 246 grams of gold bullion, with average grade of tailings of 2.80 g/t Au. 3 120 tonnes of tailings remain, averaging 1.69 g/t Au, 230 ppm Cu, 10 ppm Pb, 85 ppm Zn, 660 ppm As and less than 1 ppm Ag. They have been cyanided at least once, although the grade of stockpiles C and E (975 tonnes) suggest not all tailings were cyanided.
