Kaolin deposits at Birdwood, 48 km NE of Adelaide, are a commercial source of well-crystallized kaolinite formed in medium-grade metamorphic rocks equated with Saddleworth Formation of Adelaidean age. The kaolin appears to have formed by weathering processes. However, in the context of the local geology, this is an unusual weathering profile. Intense alteration, resulting in almost complete kaolinization, exceeds 50 metres depth compared with an average depth of weathering in surrounding rocks of 20 metres or less.
