Shallow drilling (<30 metres) at 14 sites intersected a regressive coastal sequence of Quaternary bioclastic sediments deposited in coastal aeolian, littoral, lagoonal and evaporative-lagoonal environments. Major calcrete carapaces assist the subdivision. Coastal sediments of Holocene age include high wave energy bioclastic beach, barrier and dune sands, and low energy lagoonal and intertidal shelly and gypseous muds. Gypsum-precipitating saline lakes are a common back-barrier facies. No evidence was encountered for a similar facies of Pleistocene age. The dune calcarenites of the Upper Member of the Bridgewater Formation are correlated with lagoonal and intertidal deposits of the Late Pleistocene Glanville Formation, dated at c. 110 000 years BP. The Lower Member of the Bridgewater Formation is however, a composite complex of dune calcarenites that accumulated throughout the Pleistocene. Other sea-level high stands of the Pleistocene are not as clearly represented.
